Debt is鈥痮ne of the strongest predictors of future financial health for students in the United States 鈥撯痚specially鈥痜or first-generation, low-income students.
At 海角乱伦社区,鈥痺e鈥檙e鈥痗ommitted to helping Scholars graduate with as little debt as possible, and鈥痺e鈥檙e鈥痯roud to partner with colleges and universities that share that goal, like鈥疌alifornia Polytechnic鈥疭tate University鈥(Cal Poly). Since 2025, Cal Poly has offered scholarships to up to three 海角乱伦社区 each year.
Andrea Ortiz, 海角乱伦社区 Class of 2029,鈥痺as听the听first recipient of the听scholarship and just finished her first year on campus.鈥疉ndrea said Cal Poly鈥痟adn鈥檛鈥痓een on her radar before she became a Scholar, but once she learned about the鈥痵chool,鈥痵he was鈥痠mmediately鈥痠nterested.鈥疉ndrea found out鈥痵he鈥檇鈥痳eceived听a scholarship a few days after she got her Cal Poly admissions decision.
鈥淚t made me feel like all of my hard work had paid off, and with 海角乱伦社区, and my counselor, they gave me the confidence to believe that going to Cal Poly was actually possible,鈥 Andrea said. 鈥淐oming from a family that could not support听me鈥痜inancially鈥痶hrough鈥痗ollege, it felt amazing to know that I had received鈥痶his opportunity. It also reminded me that there are people who believe in me and want to support my听journey.鈥
Since arriving at Cal Poly, Andrea has embraced the Learn鈥痓y鈥疍oing model, studying Animal Science through hands-on experiences with cows, horses, and鈥痬ore.鈥疻ith approximately 10,000 animals residing at Cal Poly, some of her experiences have included feeding and checking on the health of day-old calves, working with a graduate student on her research project about rattlesnakes, and sticking her hand inside a cow鈥檚 rumen which allows for safe access for research purposes.听鈥淜nowing that when I go to class, I will have opportunities鈥痶o learn through real hands-on experience makes me so excited,鈥澨鼳ndrea said.
Class of 2030 Scholars鈥疍ja鈥疭aenz and Kylie Watts have also been awarded听scholarships听and will start at Cal Poly in the fall.鈥疊oth Scholars鈥痜irst learned about Cal Poly at the 海角乱伦社区 College Fair in July 2025鈥痑nd were鈥痠mmediately鈥痠ntrigued by the听scholarship opportunities.
鈥淚鈥痗ouldn鈥檛鈥痓elieve it,鈥 Dja said about the moment she found out鈥痵he鈥檇鈥痳eceived the scholarship. 鈥淚 come from a鈥痜irst-generation鈥痜amily. I am the middle of three sisters, and my oldest鈥痵ister鈥痙idn鈥檛鈥痳eally go to college, so being chosen out of so many applicants felt unreal. It meant a lot that a college looked at my GPA, my classes, and all the work I put in and decided I deserved this opportunity.鈥
鈥淚 was so excited and knew right then and there where I would be attending in the Fall,鈥 Kylie said. 鈥淓arly April, they invited the other Scholars and I to听visit听San Luis Obispo. We got to tour the campus, go to the local beach,鈥痑nd got to鈥痬eet people in our major.鈥疘 had the time of my life, met so many friends, and knew I made the right decision.鈥
Kylie and Dja are looking forward to starting their studies and enjoying the scenery in San Luis Obispo.鈥疜ylie plans to follow a pre-med track and wants to go on to be an anesthesiologist.鈥疘nspired by the increased need鈥痜or鈥痬ental health support during the pandemic, Dja鈥痯lans to study psychology.
鈥淚 grew up noticing that there were鈥痭ot many鈥疢exican therapists who understood our culture and the experiences that come with it. I want to be someone who can give that support to my community,鈥 Dja said.
鈥淭o me, this scholarship means the world,鈥 Kylie said.鈥淚 feel so grateful that I get to go to an amazing school, free of charge, and can’t wait to attend in the fall.鈥

This article is an adaptation of remarks delivered by Nicole Orduno Gonzalez, Class of 2028,听at the 2026 Career Partner Breakfast.

My name is Nicole Orduno Gonzalez. I am a first-generation Mexican American, but that is not all that I am. I am the product of two immigrant parents. I come from a mom who cleans houses. I come from a dad who works in construction. And, from their sacrifice, came a daughter who is a sophomore majoring in accounting at DePaul University, hoping to have her own construction company in the near future.听

And believe me, I intend to make the most of what my parents have given to me.

Today, I serve as Co-President of DePaul Women In Business, where I help bring opportunities to fellow DePaul students through inclusive networking events. It is because of the multiple networking opportunities I have helped create that I have acquired two upcoming accounting internships: One with Deloitte and the other with Andersen.

As the oldest sister in an immigrant household, I know many people who can relate to the responsibility that comes with that role. We are often shaped from birth to be diligent, hard workers who intend to go above the limits of the sky. So, of course, this is but a glimpse of what I hope to accomplish.

Currently, I work as a Financial Coach Intern for the Economic Awareness Council, where I meet with college students and provide them with financial literacy resources. I enjoy being part of a bigger community and helping wherever I can, which is why I also serve on the board of the Spanish Coalition for Housing. Through biweekly meetings, I help develop and discuss initiatives that support community services and outreach.

In addition, I serve as a Resident Advisor for the University Center, where I oversee more than one hundred residents to help ensure a safe and positive living experience. I also work as a Construction Assistant alongside my dad, where I not only handle his contracts with his English-speaking clients but also assist with basic construction and electrical work.听

I know, probably reading this, it seems like a lot.听

These accomplishments may seem impressive, and I have worked hard for every one of them, but I would be lying if I said I did all this by myself.听

Yes, I have had support from my family, my friends, and my network. But 海角乱伦社区鈥 continuous support has helped me become who I am today.听

I was introduced to 海角乱伦社区 during my junior year at Whitney Young Magnet High School. After being accepted into the program, I remember attending the many opportunities 海角乱伦社区 had to offer: Interview preps, resume reviews, networking sessions, and the one that blew my mind, Onsite.听

At Onsite, I was able to network with college recruiters and gain early access to college offers and scholarship opportunities. Experiences like these helped pave my path to becoming a member of the DePaul community.

Although I first applied to 海角乱伦社区 four years ago, I continue to feel the impact of the organization today. Through 海角乱伦社区, I became a recipient of both the Generations Scholarship and the Renaissance Scholarship, which have played a significant role in making my college education possible.听

I was also connected with Kiley Kio, my incredible mentor, who continues to support me to this day. Whether helping me refine my resume, navigate opportunities, or think through important decisions, her guidance has been extremely valuable. I truly could not be more grateful.

海角乱伦社区 provides numerous different opportunities for students like me, who may not have had anyone to guide them through the college process. While my accomplishments may have my name attached to them, they are also a reflection of the people and organizations that invested in me along the way.听

海角乱伦社区 provided me with the resources, guidance, and opportunities that continue to form my academic, professional, and personal growth.听

As I continue forward, I hope to be a role model for the young girls who, like me, grew up wanting something bigger for themselves, a future brighter than the sun. I hope they view their background as their motivation to push forward.听

Most importantly, I encourage everyone to remember their roots, their heritage, and the people who helped them get to where they are today.听

You always have to give it your all.

Siempre hay que echarle ganas.

This National College Decision Day, we spoke to Krish Bedi, a standout Scholar from the Class of 2030, about his first year as a Scholar, his college decision for the fall, and going with the flow of what life brings his way. Krish is currently working as part of 海角乱伦社区’ Content Crew, and was recently chosen as one of the Scholars selected for the .听Read on for his reflection:

“When you鈥檙e in the right place at the right time, don鈥檛 question it, just go with the flow. It鈥檚 quite unlikely that things will pan out exactly as expected, you just gotta go with the flow. Life always seems to work its magic someway, somehow. Just go with the flow.

Just going with the flow is an amazing philosophy to lead life by. It鈥檚 what I鈥檝e tried to do during my senior year of high school, and I think it鈥檚 panned out quite well thus far. As I think back to a 10-month ago Krish, a Krish that was stiff, rigid, and closed-minded, I can鈥檛 help but be amazed at how much I鈥檝e grown since then. I still remember walking into the 海角乱伦社区 office for the first time my junior year summer. I didn鈥檛 really know what to expect, but I had no clue what a pivotal role the place I was entering would play in my development throughout the next year.

‘When you鈥檙e in the right place at the right time, don鈥檛 question it, just go with the flow.’

Fast forward to the summertime. I鈥檇 now been a Scholar for a couple of months and was starting to find my bearings. I was exhausted. I鈥檇 spent the entire morning talking to school after school during the Scholars College Fair. My brain was overloaded with brochures and the growing pressure of making the 鈥渞ight鈥 choice. It didn鈥檛 help that it was hot. I was dressed up, in a tight shirt and an even tighter tie. All I could think about was lunchtime, and the ice cream social that was promised afterwards.

Finally, while sitting with some friends I spotted the cooler. Ice cream, exactly what I needed. I walked up, opened it, and to my disappointment saw ice cream SANDWICHES. Not exactly what I had in mind. I jokingly complained to my friends, saying something about it being 鈥渇ake ice cream鈥, when a staff member nearby overheard and laughed, pretending to be offended. She introduced herself as Morgan and we started talking, just casually at first. At some point, the conversation turned to me: what I liked to do, what schools I was interested in, what I wanted to study. I talked about probably pursuing finance, but that my true passion lay in something more creative: filmmaking. That鈥檚 when she told me she was the Associate Director of Marketing and that there was an open position for Scholars to join the team.

I applied. I got it. And since then, I鈥檝e grown so much as a creative. I鈥檝e gotten exposure into the world of advertising, a route I鈥檓 now strongly considering pursuing. I鈥檝e gotten the chance to get paid doing what I love, something I didn鈥檛 even know was feasible at my age. I鈥檝e taken the money from that job to build out my very first camera rig, and hope to use it to propel my creative career even further. The ice cream social was optional. I was just in the right place at the right time. And I went with the flow.

‘It鈥檚 quite unlikely that things will pan out exactly as expected, you just gotta go with the flow.’

I was recently sifting through old footage on my camcorder, and I stumbled upon the very first college application I submitted. Sunday, 10:16:32 AM, September 28th. I鈥檓 sat at the dining table with my mom, both of us hunched over my computer, reviewing my application to the University of Southern California for what feels like the twentieth time. We scroll through every section of CommonApp, scanning for typos like our lives depend on it. My cursor hovers over the submit button. 鈥淢uma, you do the honors鈥, I say.

USC was my dream school. With a major that felt tailor-made for me: The Business of Cinematic Arts. Only 55 people were accepted into this specific major every year. It was a one-of-a-kind education I could get nowhere else: the chance to pursue my dreams as a filmmaker with the stability of a top-tier business degree. It was a one way ticket to working in Hollywood and felt like a direct path to everything I wanted. So when I got in, I should鈥檝e been ecstatic.

I wasn鈥檛.

Because a month earlier, I had signed a binding Early Decision agreement with Pomona College. Full tuition covered. A decision that, at the time, felt practical. And now, it felt like it had cost me the opportunity of a lifetime. For a while, I sat with that. I replayed every 鈥渨hat if鈥 I could think of. I even considered breaking the agreement. Eventually, I came back to the same idea I鈥檇 been trying to live by all year: just go with the flow.

So I did. A few weeks ago, I visited Pomona College for the first time and something shifted. It felt perfect. The people were open and easy to talk to. The campus was absolutely breathtaking. I sat in on an eight-person class called Jamaican Music Aesthetics and had the time of my life talking reggae for two hours straight. It was everything I had imagined USC to be in my head. But I wasn鈥檛 thinking of what I was missing out on by going to Pomona. I was fully present in where I was. By the end of the visit, any doubt sitting with me had disappeared. Pomona wasn鈥檛 a backup, I knew it was exactly where I was meant to be.

‘Life always seems to work its magic someway, somehow. Just go with the flow.’

I had done enough worrying about which school I鈥檇 enjoy the California sun from. Now, there were bigger fish to fry. Financial fish. Pomona College was giving a full tuition scholarship, but I still had to come up with about $20,000 for room and board. So, when I heard about ATLAS Fellows, a partner of 海角乱伦社区 (shameless plug) that gave $20,000 per year and multiple finance internships, I jumped at the opportunity. I submitted my application a week early and quickly heard back, inviting me to the second round of interviews.

As I read the email over, I got to the bottom, where the time and place of my interview would be.

Saturday, March 14th, 12:00 PM

Address: 444 W Lake St, 50th Floor

Huh. That鈥檚 funny. 444 W Lake Street. For some reason that address looked familiar to me. I remember seeing it somewhere for some event. Maybe for a school field trip? A networking event? I racked my brain trying to figure out if and when I鈥檇 been there to no avail. 鈥淥h well,鈥 I thought. 鈥淚 must be crazy鈥.

Fast forward to the day of my interview. March 14th. I made my way over to 444 W Lake St and entered the lobby. Once again, that feeling that I鈥檇 been here before made its way back into my mind, but I chalked it up to nerves. The elevator slowly creeped up to Floor 50, and as soon as it opened, that鈥檚 when I realized. I wasn鈥檛 crazy, I had been here before. I had been to this exact floor of this exact building almost a year ago for my 海角乱伦社区 interview. About 15 minutes later, someone led me to where I鈥檇 be interviewing and I passed by the exact room I once sat in interviewing to become a Scholar. I took this crazy coincidence as a sign of good luck, and walked into that interview with my head held high.

I got it.

And now, as I write this today on May 1st, Decision Day, I know what鈥檚 next for me. To anyone considering becoming a Chicago Scholar, I cannot stress enough how much it鈥檚 changed me for the better. Opportunities I never knew existed have opened up to me. I鈥檝e made meaningful relationships with mentors and peers alike. I鈥檝e learned and grown as a person. My senior year didn鈥檛 go how I expected it to. There were moments that challenged me, frustrated me, and forced me to let go of things I thought were set in stone. And I know that won鈥檛 change. There will be hard days this summer at my internship. There will be moments at Pomona where I feel out of place. There will be uncertainty as I try to figure out what I want from my career. But through it all, I鈥檒l always remember that I鈥檓 a Chicago Scholar. And I鈥檒l always remember to go with the flow.”

We spoke to one of our standout Scholars from the Class of 2029, Katherine Ramirez, about her experience as a Scholar, her journey through her senior year of high school and into her first year of college, and what she’s learned so far. Katherine served as a Scholar Ambassador, a REACH Advisor, and is currently working as part of 海角乱伦社区’ Content Crew. She’s in her first year at working towards her Bachelors of Fine Arts in Film and Television with a Production Concentration, and is working as an Accelerated Film Trainee with Fresh Films DT. Read on for her reflection:

As my first year of college closes out, I find myself reminiscing about my senior year of high school. Although I was weirdly more productive with 7-hour school days and extracurriculars galore, I can鈥檛 help but feel a bit accomplished in my current educational journey. In hindsight, I don鈥檛 know how past-Katherine was able to evade procrastination for so long (it鈥檚 probably the phone). But I鈥檝e changed a lot as a student and as an individual (aside from the all-too familiar canon event of becoming a night owl). Being a Chicago Scholar played a major role in my growth.

Firstly, now that the stress of extra-early applications and creative portfolios is done, I can say I鈥檝e gotten into many of my dream schools. I attend DePaul University for film school, and I remember being accepted during the Onsite College and Leadership Forum. The DePaul representative told me he attended Lane Tech for high school (my school鈥檚 rival) as he handed me the scholarship and admission certificate. Being a proud Dolphin from Whitney Young, I was naturally a bit skeptical of his offer. Of course, he assured me that we were in this college game together.

Even though it took me a while to finally decide on DePaul, I鈥檓 very appreciative of the kind representative. All my interviewers were so welcoming that day. Onsite also afforded me the chance to interview with reps from University of Southern California, and Northwestern (I got into both!). Making my college decision was one of the most grueling decisions of my life 鈥 and my life is just getting started. But all鈥檚 well that ends well; it鈥檚 important to trust yourself to make the decision best for you. To Scholars everywhere, I want to give you this tidbit of inspiration: look back, a year ago, a month ago, or even a day ago, and see how far you鈥檝e come. (And to think, a year ago, I was so worried about the future).

Next, I stepped up in my final year of high school and gave guidance to the Class of 2030. Much of my time as an underclassman was spent looking up to the legend-like seniors at my high school. I remember my junior year鈥檚 Scholar Ambassador; she encouraged me to apply to 海角乱伦社区, and actively checked in on me, wanting to know if I鈥檇 gotten into the program. It was that support that I wanted to reciprocate to the juniors during my senior year. For this reason, I applied to be a Scholar Ambassador too. I strived to be that support system for fellow students in need.

So, I bothered the juniors in my life, harped on about the perks of being a Chicago Scholar, and set up an informational table at my school鈥檚 college fair (don鈥檛 worry, it had a bunch of free swag; I have morals). I feel like part of growing up is accepting the duty and responsibility of uplifting others. I had so much assistance throughout the college application process; and in a sense, this was returning the favor.

Lastly, 海角乱伦社区 has given me access to so many incredible opportunities. I got to share my experience as a Chicago Scholar with Big Shoulders Stories (twice). Later, a group of scholars, faculty, and CEO Jeffrey Beckham attended a Blackhawks game to highlight the organization鈥檚 initiatives. We got to sit in the Chicago Sports Network Studio at the United Center, meet reporters and crew, and see behind the scenes of game-day broadcasts. At New Scholar Orientation, I learned about REACH Pathways and got a contract job helping with the development of the EdTech startup. And, of course, I love helping with the media team! I genuinely love 海角乱伦社区, so it鈥檚 been fun being a part of the Content Crew and getting to share what makes the program so awesome!

In retrospect, I鈥檝e come a long way. Through 海角乱伦社区, I was able to gain confidence while applying to colleges, build new connections, mentor my peers, and have fun experiences. And, as a very busy, sluggish, yet hopeful college student, I admit that it鈥檚 difficult to notice your achievements in real time. Just remember that it takes a community of supporters, work, time, and a whole lot of believing in yourself to matriculate. Growth is bound to happen; hopefully you take the time to reflect on your progress and celebrate it!

This Women’s History Month, we’re celebrating 海角乱伦社区 as a space that not only aims to build up our scholars and their strengths, but is also one that deeply values the contributions of the incredible women who shape our office and organization each day. Through their leadership, mentorship, and unwavering commitment, these women create an environment where scholars feel supported, seen, and empowered to reach their full potential. As we celebrate Women鈥檚 History Month, we recognize that their work is not only part of a larger legacy of women鈥檚 progress, but also a driving force in shaping the future of our scholars and our community.听

We spoke with Amy Galibois, Director of Scholar Supports & Scholarships, and Alexis Burr, Associate Director of Leadership Development & Engagement about what Women’s History Month means to them, and their hopes for future generations of women. Read on to hear their responses:

What does International Women鈥檚 Day mean to you personally?
Alexis: “International Women鈥檚 Day is a moment of reflection and gratitude for me. I was raised by strong Black matriarchs who poured into me, affirmed my gifts, and never allowed me to doubt my intelligence or capability. Because of them, I move through the world with confidence and purpose. While being a woman alone isn鈥檛 always the most salient part of my identity, the intersection of being Black and a woman deeply shapes how I navigate spaces. I honor the Black women throughout history who paved the way for me to show up fully, boldly, and without limits.”
Amy: “International Women’s Day offers an opportunity to learn about and celebrate the positive impact women are making around the world and to appreciate and reflect on the women who have shaped my life.”
What is one of your major accomplishments within 海角乱伦社区?
Alexis: “One of my major accomplishments at 海角乱伦社区 has been supporting Scholars in pursuing their dreams through the Educational and Leadership Development Grant. Over the years, I鈥檝e had the privilege of supporting Scholars as they studied abroad, completed internships, attended conferences, conducted research, launched community initiatives, and explored opportunities they may not have otherwise had access to. For me, managing the grant was never just about distributing funds but about helping Scholars recognize that they already have what they need within them to be impactful leaders in the world. Being part of that journey, and watching Scholars step confidently into their potential, has been incredibly meaningful to me.”
Amy: “One of my most meaningful accomplishments at 海角乱伦社区 has been connecting Scholars to impactful scholarships that help make college completion possible without the financial stress that too often accompanies it.”
What is your favorite memory involving mentorship and growth within 海角乱伦社区?
What advice would you give to young women who want to follow a similar path as you?
Alexis: “Stay creative and treat every experience as information. Pay attention to what you enjoy, what you don鈥檛, and what stretches you because each of those lessons can help move you forward. Stay curious, ask questions, and don鈥檛 be afraid if your path isn鈥檛 linear. Think about becoming the woman your younger self would be proud to see and your older self will be grateful to look back on.”
What does female empowerment look like to you?
Amy: “Female empowerment involves creating access to opportunity and education. It means ensuring that women have the resources and support they need to grow, connect, create, and lead. I am proud that our work at 海角乱伦社区 does just that, empowering young women to achieve their potential and thrive.”
What change would you like to see for women in the future?
Alexis: I would like for women today and beyond to learn to trust their instincts, honor their capacity, and resist the pressure to overextend themselves to prove their worth.
Amy: I want to see a future in which women around the world have equitable access to education, financial stability and freedom to pursue their goals.
What is a quote that reminds you of the woman you aspire to be?

We asked our Managing Director of College Success, Alicia Ferraris, what sets our 海角乱伦社区 Mentorship program apart – and what the new application process looks like. Read on to hear her thoughts:

At first glance, the 海角乱伦社区 Mentor Program might look like just another college access support opportunity. But what really sets it apart is the role our mentors play in helping shape the next generation of leaders in Chicago.

海角乱伦社区 is the largest college readiness, persistence, and leadership development organization in the city, and our mentor program is a big part of that impact. What makes it special is the long鈥憈erm, cohort鈥慴ased community mentors build with their Scholars – and the shared focus on leadership development alongside the college journey. Our mentors commit to two years of support, walking alongside Scholars through key milestones in college and early career life. 海角乱伦社区 mentors and Scholars often staying in touch long after graduation.

In the first year of the program, mentors support high school seniors as they navigate the college application process. One of the most unique aspects of our model is the cohort structure: mentors work in small teams of two to three and support a group of eight to ten Scholars together. This means Scholars benefit from multiple trusted adults cheering them on, while mentors gain a built鈥慽n community of support. Mentorship doesn鈥檛 stop once Scholars graduate high school, either. Throughout Scholars鈥 first year of college, mentors continue to offer virtual support. With monthly video sessions, mentors help Scholars connect with campus resources and adjust to college life academically, personally, and socially. Throughout the entire experience, mentors are supported by 海角乱伦社区 staff and guided by a research鈥慴ased curriculum, tools, and resources.

This year, we鈥檙e excited to introduce an improved mentor application process designed to be easier and more flexible for applicants. After submitting an application, prospective mentors complete a virtual interview through Spark Hire. This video interview platform allows candidates to share their story, interests, and motivation on their own schedule. At the same time, prospective mentors can gain experience with interviewing and answering introspective questions. The process is simple, accessible, and helps applicants move through the process more quickly while giving them space to show who they really are.

At 海角乱伦社区, we鈥檙e actively building a diverse, engaged, and supportive mentor community鈥攂ecause our Scholars deserve nothing less. We couldn鈥檛 do this work without our mentors. We鈥檙e grateful for the time, care, and leadership they bring to our community.

At 海角乱伦社区,听we’re听committed to helping听students听graduate debt-free or with as little student debt as possible, allowing them to get the best start in their journey after听undergrad. Through partnerships with incredible individual and corporate Scholarship providers,听our Scholars have access to life-changing opportunities as they matriculate to and through college.听

Through our longstanding partnership with听,听we鈥檝e听distributed eight Invenergy scholarships to students attending a four-year college or university who are passionate about pursuing a career in听clean听energy, in addition to opening the doors to internship opportunities for seven students.听

Check out the reflection from Zandie Lawson, a senior at听听and Class of 2026 Scholar, who was听a听recipient of the听Invenergy Scholarship:听

“Receiving the Invenergy Scholarship has been a major milestone in my journey at Denison University, providing more than just financial relief it has offered the peace of mind that comes with being truly supported. Knowing that Invenergy invests in students dedicated to environmental stewardship has听validated听my passion for sustainability and empowered me to dream bigger. This security has been the foundation upon which听I鈥檝e听built my college experience, allowing me to move past the stress of financial barriers and fully commit myself to the leadership and academic roles that define who I am today.

Because of this support,听I鈥檝e听had the capacity to dive deep into my community and my studies. Since my听freshman听year, I have been incredibly involved, eventually rising to become the President of the African Caribbean Student Association, a Senior Docent and Interviewer for the office of admissions, and a Fellow for the Environmental Studies department.听Beyond my professional and environmental pursuits, the scholarship has granted me the “luxury” of creative freedom; I鈥檝e been able to pursue a minor in dance and perform with the Denison Dance Company over the course of my time at Denison.听

My academic journey as a double major in Politics & Public Affairs and Environmental Studies has been equally fueled by this support. As a pre-law student, I am dedicated to pursuing a career in environmental and international law, a goal that was solidified during my time studying abroad in South Africa and Namibia. There, I had the invaluable opportunity to study social and environmental change firsthand while conducting research on green energy. I feel incredibly lucky to have听matched with听an organization like Invenergy that aligns so perfectly with my professional goals and my personal passion for protecting our global environment. This balance of environmental advocacy, campus leadership, and artistic expression would not have been possible without Invenergy鈥檚 belief in my potential.”

A recent showed that nearly two-thirds of American voters do not think a college degree is worth the cost. While we at 海角乱伦社区 agree that the cost of education is too high, we also believe in the transformative power of a degree.

We asked Class of 2030 Scholars why they believe a degree is worth it 鈥 see their responses below.

鈥淕etting a 4-year degree is important to me because it鈥檚 my ticket to build the best version of myself. My degree will provide me with the skills and experience I need to grow, while giving me the ability to invest my degree back into my community.鈥 鈥 Skyeshell Blake

鈥淚 want to get a 4-year degree to continue the legacy of excellence that I have been raised in. Growing up around successful black women who defeated all odds has only pushed me further, and going to college is my opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge to uplift my community just as they uplifted me.鈥 鈥 Indigo Gray

鈥淕etting a bachelor鈥檚 degree is essential to me because of all the opportunities that would permit me to advance in my career path. In the electrical engineering field, I want to have knowledge and experience with hardware and software properties to create astounding devices for future generations in the world. With that vision in mind, I believe that I can become the successful person I aspire to be one day.鈥 鈥 Janeen Scott

鈥淕etting a four-year degree is incredibly important to me because it represents the transition into the next phase of my journey toward medical school. I aspire to become a medical doctor, specifically a neurologist, and earning a bachelor鈥檚 degree is one of the essential steps I need to take to make this goal a reality. In addition, as a first-generation immigrant student, completing my degree would be a dream come true for both me and my family.鈥 鈥 Ayomide Olatunji

鈥淚n a world that is steadily declining, having a bachelor’s degree would help deepen my effect on stopping it. Even when everything seems to be for naught, education and the wish to create change is supported when and after obtaining a four-year degree.鈥澨 Naphtali Davis

鈥淕etting a four-year degree is important to me because I鈥檒l be able to raise the bar. I will prove to not only others, but to myself that I am beyond capable. It will reveal that drive, dedication, and determination come at a good price.鈥 鈥 Wyneisha Boyd

鈥淎 four-year degree is important for me because it will help prepare me for my future job. It will also help me secure a pretty good paycheck to be able to get paid well. Being a first gen also helps motivate me to attend college to pursue a four-year degree and be on track to get an MBA.鈥 鈥 Michael Gomez-Hernandez

鈥淭he reason that getting a four-year degree is important to me is because it effects your ability through life. If I have a degree on a topic I care about, then people will take me seriously when I engage with that topic.鈥 鈥 Geovonni Green

海角乱伦社区 has partners all over Chicago, but one of our longest-standing partnerships came to us through 海角乱伦社区鈥 Founder Tim Schwertfeger, former CEO and Chairman of Nuveen Investments.

Since Tim鈥檚 initial introduction, TIAA/Nuveen has supported 海角乱伦社区 through scholarships, sponsorships, and volunteering.

鈥淭IAA/Nuveen is committed to funding college and career readiness for first-generation college students in our community, so our partnership with 海角乱伦社区 is a natural fit,鈥 said Karly Ashlock, Director of Community Impact at TIAA. 鈥淲e know that attaining a college degree can unlock the potential for a lifetime of financial security. It鈥檚 been an honor for TIAA/Nuveen to walk alongside these students during such pivotal moments, and to invest in the future they鈥檙e building.鈥

In 2025, TIAA/Nuveen sponsored the New Scholar Orientation opening session, playing a crucial role in the Class of 2030鈥檚 first impression of 海角乱伦社区. Through their sponsorship, we were able to host a virtual celebration for over 600 students and their parents. TIAA/Nuveen also sponsored pre-filled pencil pouches for every incoming Scholar, ensuring that they all had a piece of 海角乱伦社区 and TIAA/Nuveen to take into their senior year of high school.

TIAA/Nuveen鈥檚 impact extends far beyond the current class of high school Scholars. For several years, TIAA/Nuveen sponsored major components of the Onsite College and Leadership Forum experience, including the Leadership Hub, which gave community organizations and vendors the chance to offer resources to Scholars and families, and our Family Engagement programming. Through their support of Onsite alone, TIAA/Nuveen has touched over 1,000 lives.

Recently, TIAA/Nuveen supported Scholars in a new way by contributing to Scholar Dollars, funding that provides emergency funding and grants to Scholars during their college years.

鈥淭IAA/Nuveen have been such good partners to 海角乱伦社区,鈥 said Andre Hebert, managing director of partnerships at Chicago听 Scholars. 鈥淲e often see a TIAA/Nuveen representative volunteering at signature events, which is a huge help as we undertake those busy and impactful days.鈥

鈥淭he relationships CS has with TIAA/Nuveen is one we want to highlight because it speaks to the impact of strategic partnerships that can deepen over time,鈥 said Jeff Beckham, Jr., CEO of 海角乱伦社区. 鈥淲hat started out as a scholarship opportunity led to a company investing their time, treasure, and talent to ensuring Chicago鈥檚 youth have access to pivotal college and career readiness programs. One of our primary contacts at TIAA/Nuveen is even mentoring a cohort of Scholars!鈥

With their primary location in River North, the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab has partnered with 海角乱伦社区 to host several Emerge interns over the years, as well as hosting yearly Growth Labs at their dynamic downtown space. We spoke with Maya Yuen, Manager of the Robert R. McCormick Foundation Center for Hope and Equity at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab about the organization’s commitment to our Scholars.

Firstly, why did you choose to partner with 海角乱伦社区?

We partnered with 海角乱伦社区 because their model aligns with our goal at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab to create paths to meaningful healthcare careers and to invest in the next generation of leaders.”

To continue, why听did you choose to specifically support the Emerge Program as a Career Partner and Growth Lab Host?听

“The Emerge program aligns closely with the mission of our Robert R. McCormick Foundation Center for Hope and Equity 鈥 particularly our focus on creating pathways to rewarding healthcare careers. Emerge provides us with a meaningful opportunity to support early talent, provide immersive experiences and develop future professionals who reflect the communities we serve.”

Meet Angel Quintana, the new Development Intern with 海角乱伦社区! Angel is a Chicago Scholar from the Class of 2026, currently attending .

We spoke with Angel about his experience as a Scholar so far, what he’s excited to learn with this internship experience, and why he decided to intern at 海角乱伦社区. Read on for his responses!

First, can you tell us a bit about where you’re going to school, and your career aspirations?

“Hi! I’m Angel, and I am attending Columbia College Chicago with a major in creative writing and a minor in Latin America Studies. My biggest career aspiration is to be a journalist in the entertainment industry! With that, I am preparing to have my final semester in Los Angeles in Spring 2026 as part of Columbia’s Semester in LA Program.”

What’s your experience as a Chicago Scholar been like so far?

I can’t imagine what my academic and professional life would be like without 海角乱伦社区. I wouldn’t be able to attend Columbia and make so many incredible friends without their help. My time being an Emerge Intern helped me develop professional skills very early on and the summer I worked at Weigel Broadcasting remains one of my most cherished summers ever. It’s been nothing but wonderful experiences with 海角乱伦社区 and I’m excited to see what’s next.”

听Finally, as a Scholar yourself, what made you want to work with the 海角乱伦社区 team for this internship?

There’s a variety of different reasons why I wanted to intern at 海角乱伦社区. The most prominent one is that I love being involved with non-profit organizations, it’s something I’ve been passionate about since high school. As someone who would like to one day create their own academic & arts program, I was drawn to being a Development Intern to gain more hands-on experience and see how a team comes together to make everything work in an organization. Furthermore, from my experiences being a Emerge intern in the past; I know the workplace will be supportive and uplifting as everyone on the Dream Team is kind.”

This piece was written in response to the October 23, 2024 New York Times article, 鈥淔reshman Enrollment Appears to Decline for the First Time Since 2020.”

The question of access to college is one that is not unique to our time but has grown in its presence as various factors compile to make it more apparent than ever. The NYT article 鈥淔reshman Enrollment Appears to Decline for the First Time Since 2020鈥 makes note of this, highlighting how these challenges are especially true for historically underrepresented students. At Olin College of Engineering, we鈥檝e been aware of this trend and have been working to address it through direct work with CBOs like 海角乱伦社区.

As a small institution, Olin is flexible, quick-to-adapt, and able to pivot when enrollment markers are evaluated.听 What this most recent application cycle has told us specifically is that many young scholars are facing two major obstacles to enrollment that are out of their control but force their hand when deciding whether to apply to college or not.

  1. 鈥24 FAFSA Challenges
  1. ROI / Promise of the Future

The first, which likely impacted low-income families most significantly, will hopefully be worked out in the coming cycle and the roadblocks that hindered folks from applying will (fingers crossed) be removed. We assume that students felt it was not wise to immediately enroll anywhere without a better grasp of their financial aid offerings and as such, stepped back momentarily or entirely. This ephemeral issue should cease to inhibit enrollment in the future, but we are keeping an eye on the developments.听 We find that clear communication about our financial aid processes can be reassuring to prospective students and their families, and our small size allows us to respond directly to questions or concerns as they arise.

The second, a more prescient trend, is students questioning the ROI, or return on investment, of higher education. And why shouldn鈥檛 they? With mounting student loans and difficult job markets, it鈥檚 a troubling scenario for those seeking a college degree. They wonder, will it all be worth it?

At Olin, we believe our project-based learning curriculum offers students peace of mind in this realm by instilling key teamwork, executive function, and leadership skills that translate immediately to the workforce. As such, a solid engineering background with these attributes at its core does not require additional degrees to be competitive in today鈥檚 job market, allowing students to put their Olin degree to use immediately upon graduation.听 Our push for outside the classroom learning opportunities like internships and research also strengthens the appeal of an Oliner鈥檚 resume to prospective employers. Unfortunately, this immediate ROI isn鈥檛 true for all academic programs or majors, thus students may feel the high price tag of a college degree isn鈥檛 worth the investment. This could foster disillusionment with higher education overall, increasingly so from those facing additional barriers to learning, resulting in the figures the NYT article addresses.

In the case of FAFSA, Olin has ensured our Financial Aid team could听听 offer our current and prospective students as much support as possible, while staying abreast of any developments from the Department of Education. In the case of FAFSA, Olin has ensured our Financial Aid team could offer our current and prospective students as much support as possible, while staying abreast of any developments from the Department of Education.

And with the second point of concern, we鈥檝e been addressing this for years through those CBO connections mentioned earlier. Information on our website or during our on-campus events is great, but connecting with those directly in the community is even better. Not only do we aim to educate more students about Olin鈥檚 offerings, but we also hope to build the toolkit of CBO counselors so they are best prepared to advise students who may otherwise be unable to find the answers on ROI they are looking for.

Collaborations like counselor information events, student visits (both on-campus and virtual), financial aid town halls, and open houses can deliver this insight in several accessible formats. These such offerings (quite standard on most campuses) help connect CBOs to their local colleges and those across the country. Higher education institutions can increase the attractiveness of these outlets or reach out and make connections directly to support prospective students in the best way they see fit. Meanwhile, we are always looking to grow engagement with those on the counseling side of college process and the students they serve.

Accordingly, we see our relationship with 海角乱伦社区 as a beneficial two-way street where we can offer insight and gain great knowledge in return. When institutions like ours collaborate and grow for the benefit of students, especially those who may not have access to inside information otherwise, we鈥檙e directly combating the concerns the NYT points out and working toward a higher education landscape that is shifting for the betterment of the next generation of learners and leaders.

海角乱伦社区 is excited to bring you a series of essays from Scholars and Alumni about the impact of a college degree on their lives, their families, and their communities. This essay was written by Celine Gonzalez, Class of 2022.

When I think of how my college degree has made an impact on my family, I think back to my years as a teenager in high school. Back then, I still was unsure if I would have the privilege of going to college. I come from an immigrant family and my goal was to always be able to provide for them, however, I never thought I would be able to go to college due to the expense. My senior year of high school, I got accepted into The University of Illinois at Chicago and earned enough scholarships to cover my tuition expenses. Throughout college, I worked multiple part-time jobs while going to school to pay for my books and other living expenses. That experience helped me get introduced to the 鈥渞eal world鈥 and face the reality that comes with being an adult and having to provide for myself.

In my first semester of college, I was enrolled as a student in the College of

Pre-Medicine and had to enroll in lectures and science labs. These classes were very challenging for me, and I found myself struggling and under a lot of stress. These first semester classes taught me that although I thought that I had wanted to pursue a

career in the medical field and had always dreamed of helping sick people, I did not have a passion for Biology and Chemistry. In my second semester of college, I decided that I wanted to switch my major from Pre-Medicine to Business Administration. I felt as if college helped impact how I looked at situations outside of an academic setting because it showed me the importance of trying new things even if I did not have a passion for them. It also taught me that it is never too late to start over. I wouldn鈥檛 trade my college experience for anything because although work experience is meaningful, college was able to provide me with the opportunity to connect with people from different backgrounds that I probably would not have crossed paths with otherwise.

Overall, I have been able to bring my new perspectives into my household and show my family the way college has helped me to grow as an individual. My goal was

always to make my family proud and show them how knowledge is power, and how their support and unconditional love has helped me to achieve everything including completing a Bachelor鈥檚 degree. College showed me that success is not automatically achieved with college courses. Students also need to have strong work ethic and passion to truly make a difference in their life and see change.

海角乱伦社区 is proud to bring you essays about the impact of a college degree on our Scholars, their families, and communities. This essay was contributed by Michelle Valencia (Class of 2026), a student at University of St. Francis.听

I remember visiting campus for the first time with my parents. It was for a scholarship competition to determine whether I would attend university. I am generally a confident person, but the reality of leaving high school and starting a new chapter of my life made my heart palpitate. I realized I had the potential to improve my family鈥檚 life and bring positive changes to my community if I decided to embark on this journey for the next four years. As these thoughts ran through my head, I heard my parents speaking quietly in the background. 鈥淭his place feels like home,鈥 my mom said. My dad agreed, saying he would feel proud if his daughter spent the upcoming years at this university. After overhearing my parents鈥 conversation, I felt certain of my decision to pursue a college degree.

As someone who grew up in Mexico, I always envisioned ways to improve my surroundings. Throughout school, I have participated in advocacy events to defend immigrants鈥 rights and called for increased resources for the most vulnerable in society. Currently, I am involved in over 10 clubs and organizations at my university. Among many roles, I serve as the Vice President of Student Endeavors for the Student Government Association. In this role, I plan large-scale events on campus and connect with students and faculty to determine their needs. I am also the Chair of Servant Leaders, a group dedicated to placing others鈥 needs before our own and helping students attain career-accelerating opportunities. I feel blessed to have the chance to impact lives through my work in these roles. Moreover, I am grateful to my parents for supporting me along the way.

I am also deeply appreciative of 海角乱伦社区 for equipping me with the skills and resources to be where I am now. 海角乱伦社区 gave me mentorships, a valuable network, and lasting relationships. I value being a Chicago Scholar because I know someone had faith in my abilities and saw my potential to accomplish great things. Becoming a Chicago Scholar was a pivotal moment in my life, and it remains one of the greatest contributors to my earning a college degree.

As I write this essay, I recognize the tremendous impact earning a college degree will have on my family and community. I have the opportunity to have an education, something not everyone has equal access to. I am committed to using my college degree to change the lives of those struggling and help them attain a better life situation. Further, I will use my college degree in my career to ensure people are treated fairly in the workplace and recognize their self-worth.

Deciding to pursue a degree in Film & TV at New York University was one of the best things I could鈥檝e done for myself. While it鈥檚 true that in most artistic fields, a degree isn鈥檛 a necessary aspect of a successful career, there is so much value in doing so anyway. I grew up loving and consuming art, and it showed me ways to communicate with the world even when I found doing so extremely difficult. Art has made me who I am, and I am extremely passionate about creating stories that help others discover who they are too.

So, what does a college degree have to do with any of that? For one, being in a controlled environment that encourages me to make mistakes and learn through them in my craft is invaluable. I鈥檝e learned so much more about how to take care of the technical aspects of art so that I can better communicate the heart of each story. But, the most beneficial part of my schooling so far has been the people that I鈥檝e been able to connect with as a result of being here.

I鈥檝e found so many lifetime collaborators through my time at NYU, and I haven鈥檛 even graduated. I鈥檝e connected with alumni who have founded their own production companies and have worked at big-names companies like NBC or Disney. I鈥檝e talked to multi-hyphenates who have done everything from acting to camerawork. My network has exploded, and now I have so many dependable contacts that I can always call when I need something. Not to mention the professors that I have access to now. There are so many people here that have created work that inspires me and have taught more productive and efficient ways to work.

Because of my degree, I鈥檓 being given opportunities that I wouldn鈥檛 have otherwise have. My time in college has helped me secure internships at WarnerBros/Discovery and HBO. I had the opportunity to study abroad in Prague and to work on 35 mm film. I鈥檝e connected with other Black creatives and taken up leadership roles in spaces dedicated to us.

My time in college has helped me find security in my sense of self and identity. Pursuing a degree has been one of the best things I鈥檝e done in my life and I can鈥檛 wait to see what post-grad life holds for me.

Each year at 海角乱伦社区, we bring on a group of Scholar Ambassadors to represent the best of our work, allowing newly accepted Scholars to develop their leadership skills and participate in recruiting the next class of Scholars over the course of a year.
This year, we’re excited for you to meet the Class of 2029 Scholar Ambassadors through a series of blog posts and content that we’ll bring you monthly, to share how the Ambassadors are navigating their first year as Scholars.
Today, in celebration of both National First Generation Day and our , we asked some of our Ambassadors about their experience as future first gen college students, what challenges they’ve faced so far as the first in their families to pursue college, and what they’re looking forward to.

Wisdom May, 海角乱伦社区 Class of 2029, Kenwood Academy High School

“Growing up life in itself was tough, and college wasn鈥檛 a guaranteed path for my family鈥攊t was more of a dream I held onto yet I never thought I鈥檇 achieve. My father, with such a poor academic career, didn鈥檛 give himself the chance to attempt college, while my mom, despite trying multiple times, struggled to complete even her first year of college. Watching their journey time and time again, I realized early on how significant it would be for myself and my family to pursue a higher education. For them, it was a door that was never fully opened; for me, it鈥檚 a door I鈥檓 determined to walk through, not just for myself, but to honor the paths they paved before me.”
“However, this journey has not come without its trials and tribulations. One of the biggest obstacles I鈥檝e faced as a first-generation student is the constant feeling of not being good enough. It鈥檚 hard to look around and see classmates who seem to always have an advantage鈥攚hether it鈥檚 access to better resources, guidance from family members who鈥檝e navigated college before, or simply knowing how the system works. I鈥檝e often felt like I鈥檓 playing catch-up, trying to understand a process that others seem to know by heart. Additionally, navigating the college application process without much help from my home has added heavily to the amount of pressure. My parents, despite their support and encouragement, haven鈥檛 been able to guide me through the process and I鈥檝e had to figure things out on my own鈥攆inancial aid applications, personal statements, college information, and more鈥攕ometimes feeling behind compared to my peers with more informed support systems.”
However, despite these challenges, I鈥檝e made it to the finish mark and college is within my reach, earning scholarships and seizing opportunities that once seemed like an elusive dream I could have only dreamt. This journey has shown me that hard work, persistence, and self-belief can help overcome even the toughest obstacles. Looking ahead, I am excited to fully embrace my college journey and pursue my career as a psychologist. Despite everything, I will not falter in my pursuit of this dream because I know I am capable of achieving what I set out to do.”

Enrique Camacho, 海角乱伦社区 Class of 2029, Benito Juarez Community Academy High School

Since I was little, experiencing college life has been both a dream and a goal for me. College life to me consists of joining different groups that cultivate my Mexican heritage, studying abroad in places around the world, being able to have a whole different social community at my disposal, and attending college parties. My parents always encouraged me to strive for perfection in school and give myself the best chance to break the barrier of our family’s inability to go to college. While I was encouraged by my dreams and wishes, it was momentarily difficult for me to navigate the complexities of financial aid and the fear of college rejections.”

“As a future first-generation college student, I strongly desire to become a role model for my younger sister, who will apply to college in four years. She鈥檚 entering high school next year, and I want to show her that it鈥檚 possible to achieve our dreams despite the challenges. There are times when I struggle with the fear of what I do is not enough or if I’m good enough to attend college. However, my parent’s unwavering support and my small victories, like being part of different clubs such as the Student Voice Committee and serving as the Vice President of the Spanish club, reinforce my belief that what I鈥檝e accomplished is thrilling and that I should be proud of my achievements.”

“Additionally, being accepted into 海角乱伦社区 and serving as an ambassador, as well as mentoring incoming high school freshmen at my school, has given me further opportunities to lead and inspire. Being a first-generation college student allows me to break the cycle of generational trauma where no one in my family has gone to college. I aspire to earn a degree in sociology to become a social worker, helping others in need while also providing financial and emotional support to my family. This journey is not just about me but also making the path easier for my sister and future generations.

海角乱伦社区 is excited to bring you a series of essays and reflections on the impact of Scholars’ college degrees on their communities, their families, and themselves. This essay was written by Yezenia Sandoval, Class of 2o19.

My junior year of high school, I was one out of two students selected from our junior class
to become a writing lab tutor. Little did I know it would become one of the most rewarding
experiences of my high school career. Throughout my childhood, I enjoyed reading
and writing and even considered pursuing a career in journalism. As a result, when I was offered this position, I saw it as an opportunity to sharpen my writing skills and contribute to the strength of my college applications.

However, I vividly remember the day I encountered a student who had been mandated by his literature teacher to come to the writing lab. The way he stared at his empty hands as my supervisor, a composition teacher, repeated the prompt to him several times. I came to realize that the blank stare, which eventually turned into blatant frustration, was a result of a language barrier.

When I began to translate between him and my supervisor, I saw the relief and gratitude on his face and was ultimately impressed by the depth of his contributions to the writing prompt. I remember leaving the room ultimately feeling like our education system had failed him. From that day onward, I realized the importance of this writing lab as a resource center but also the ways in which my identity impacted the space.

As a first-generation college graduate, I am grateful that my parents laid the foundation
for my educational growth through their consistent involvement and encouragement of
afterschool activities that would stimulate my educational development. However, this is not the
reality for most public school students across Chicago. Through my writing lab experience, I
learned about the academic gaps in our educational system by reading through hundreds of
essays. More importantly, I gained a desire to push for educational opportunities and
resources for students who come from similar backgrounds. This led to my involvement in
several initiatives at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor advocating for diversity and
inclusion in both academic and professional spaces.

Being involved in ALMA, a four-day orientation program for Latinx students, and Bridge Schools PLUS, a mentorship program for first year students, I was able to help students navigate the complexities of a college environment. My involvement in these programs was very rewarding but has also taught me the need to advocate for educational reform that paves the path for students to enter higher education.

As a mentor and non-profit leader, a college education has allowed me to leverage my
own educational experiences to create tools to close the achievement gap. These experiences
ultimately informed my decision to pursue a career within the education non-profit sector, which allows me to work with various stakeholders, including CPS students and educators, to create access to paid workforce opportunities while inspiring students to be pioneers within their respective communities.

A Scholar鈥檚 Echo

First in the family
to get a high school degree
and a college degree.

Valedictorian
in high school
and
Summa Cum Laude
in university.

Parents were immigrants,
didn鈥檛 know any English.
Worked all week,
late into the night.
When they came home,
I was sleeping.
When I came home,
they were working.

I told them
I鈥檒l get a good job and
take care of them.
They laughed.

An English degree?
That won鈥檛 make money, you see.
That鈥檚 what my mommy always told me.

Had a full ride to college
and a little bit of extra pocket money.
So don鈥檛 worry Mommy, you see
I love learning
and
I love English.

Pursuing your dreams
is the lesson I will teach;
And don鈥檛 worry,
I will make money from it too.

I give my parents allowance now.

They brag about it to their friends,
and they get jealous.

The pride and hope of the family;
a one-way ticket straight
out of generational poverty.

My family is proud of me,
my friends look up to me,
And my baby sister
(actually has to raise her head to look up at me).

I graduated!
She thinks I鈥檓 so smart.
She asks me for help
with solving angles for triangle arcs!

That is not my expertise.
I am a writer you see.
But I hold her pencil and paper
and we ask Google for help鈥
please.
My family and the community
asks me about
what to study in college,
and
if it was worth it.

I tell them:

Education
allowed me
to explore
and find myself;

My dreams,
my hopes,
my aspirations,
and my purpose.

The opportunities
I received
and the connections
I made
are long-lasting
and meaningful.

Had no help
in pursuing higher education,
so I sought out every opportunity
and
海角乱伦社区
was one of the many.

The lessons I鈥檝e learned
still resonate with me today and
because of their impact on my life,
I want to give back my strongest skill –
writing.

I edit cover letters,
resumes,
job applications, and
got students into grad school
and new jobs.

I give advice,
study tips, and
time management tricks.

Giving pep talks
and encouragement
all make me feel warm.

Right now,
working hard at my alma mater
by helping students apply to college
and putting extra hours
for 海角乱伦社区;
We are creating a product for students –
the IRL Game of Life.

A journey of giving
and REACH(ing)
back out
to the community
and

helping low-income
under-resourced students

like me
with my degree.
鈥..
Mommy is on the phone
with a friend:
They ask her,
鈥淒idn’t your daughter graduate?鈥
Mommy says yes.
They ask,
鈥淲hat did she study?鈥
Mommy smiles,
鈥淓苍驳濒颈蝉丑!鈥

Each year at 海角乱伦社区, we bring on a group of Scholar Ambassadors to represent the best of our work, allowing newly accepted Scholars to develop their leadership skills and participate in recruiting the next class of Scholars over the course of a year.
This year, we’re excited for you to meet the Class of 2029 Scholar Ambassadors through a series of blog posts and content that we’ll bring you monthly, to share how the Ambassadors are navigating their first year as Scholars.
To kick things off, we had our Ambassadors tell us how the start of their experience in the program has been, why they decided to apply for the Ambassador program, and whether they feel that being an Ambassador will help prepare them for the upcoming Onsite College and Leadership Forum.

Devine Valdez, 海角乱伦社区 Class of 2029, Charles P. Steinmetz College Prep

“Hello! My name is Devine Valdez and I’m going to be a first Gen college student (Class of
2029)
The start of my Chicago Scholar Ambassadors journey has been absolutely unreal. Even
though the program itself just started, I feel like i鈥檝e connected with both other members and
our facilitator. Our facilitator, Karla, will go out of her way to make sure we鈥檙e all mentally and
physically flourishing. I love that kind of support especially with On-Site coming up! Being in
the Ambassador program creates a safe space for everyone. It鈥檚 also fun! Even though my
Ambassador journey just started, I already see the ways its broaden my perspective on life. I
love being in this program and look forward to continuing my journey with everyone.
I decided to become an Ambassador because I wanted to bring opportunities like these back
to my community. I鈥檓 a huge believer in creating pathways for low opportunity communities
like mine. I believed in everything 海角乱伦社区 Ambassadors represents so advocating
for it was a must for me. I want to bring new resources that every student deserves to at least
have a chance to obtain. I absolutely believe being an Ambassador will help me prepare for
On-Site. They prepare us to take advantage of every opportunity they throw at us and trust
me when I say this, Its a lot. They also encourage us to be ourselves and to not be ashamed
of who we are and where we started. Self expression will help a ton during college interviews
so they can get to know us away from our classroom. Also just them telling us to speak loudly
and proudly to convey confidence is helpful as is. Being interviewed is nerve wrecking, self
presentation gives the first impression. Just fake it till you make it, and eventually you will feel
confident. Interviews are all about talking about yourself, don鈥檛 be shy! Be unapologetically
yourself!”

Nico Hussey-Gonzalez, 海角乱伦社区 Class of 2029, William Jones College Prep High School

When I applied to the 海角乱伦社区 Ambassador program, I was nervous of a
very competitive and rigorous experience. Although I was not wrong about the rigor, the
Ambassador program welcomed me with warm and open arms. The first meeting was
filled with friendly people, who further established connections by reaching out time
and time again. I came out of that meeting with a smile on my face, knowing not only
that I had an amazing support system, but that we were going to help a lot of people
through 海角乱伦社区.

The 海角乱伦社区 program has already helped thousands with their
character, the college application process and building connections that will help them
succeed. However, this has only happened due to the stellar scholars and mentors that
have fostered these ideals within the entire 海角乱伦社区 community. Scholar
Ambassadors make sure that Scholars and Mentors not only help this program, but pass
on its message and its benefits into the program that has helped me and many others so
much. Though there has been only one meeting, I know the Ambassadors will help
secure this opportunity for many.

Another one of the Ambassador鈥檚 duties is to grow as a leader and as a speaker.
To be an ambassador is to communicate, to ensure the cohesive workings of a program
as large as 海角乱伦社区. It is also to ensure that within a program, workplace or
even a school, each person feels connected within their community. The Ambassador
program grows leaders and speakers, fostering them not only for college but for their
lives beyond, so that 海角乱伦社区 and even Chicago itself can be better off for it. At
Onsite, for example, a place where Scholars are given access to exclusive interviews to
colleges they have applied to, the tools that are given and fostered in Ambassadors help
them flourish at Onsite. Interviews leave college admissions offers with stunning
impressions of communication skills, and colleges all around admire the leadership that
can be found in each and every one of the Scholar Ambassadors. Through the amazing
support system, tool for good and leadership building that can be found in the Scholar
Ambassador program, I am glad and proud to be an Ambassador myself.

National Intern Day 2024

In celebration of National Intern Day, we’re bringing you a blog post written by one of our very own Emerge Summer Career and Leadership Program Interns, Aniyah Davies. This year’s Emerge program wraps up with the closing ceremony tomorrow, and our interns are walking away with an incredible experience, new connections, and friends for life – proving just how valuable internships can be, particularly for students from under-resourced communities. Read on for Aniyah’s blog post!

“How My EMERGE Internship Shapes My Future: Lessons and Goals Ahead”

by , Marketing Intern with 海角乱伦社区

I always abide by this quote: 鈥淐reativity is the language we use to communicate the urgency of our dreams for a better future,鈥 by Audre Lorde. I value this quote because it emphasizes the importance of creativity in one’s career and goals as you progress. One of my many aspirations for my career is to have the opportunity to be creative in my role and to have a job that is equally fulfilling in the way that I can help others.

As an EMERGE Intern at 海角乱伦社区, working within their Development External Engagement and Marketing teams, I initially thought EMERGE would simply be a way to gain research skills, experience, and an understanding of professionalism before applying for more jobs and grad school. However, as I have spent more time getting to know the people around me and developing connections, I realized that the EMERGE Internship is giving me invaluable knowledge. It is also teaching me the importance of building bonds and learning from those around you.

When I started at 海角乱伦社区, it was during the busy New Scholar Orientation at Roosevelt University. Despite the chaos, my co-workers warmly welcomed me and took an interest in getting to know me. My supervisor, Morgan Mercieca, let me shadow her, helping me adjust to the new environment and allowing us to bond. Our connection continues to grow through 1:1 meetings and her willingness to offer advice. She has taught me the importance of building connections and relying on others for support.

Over the past few weeks at my internship, I have observed so much, such as the way my co-workers interact, the love they share for one another in the workspace, and the kindness they have shown me. 海角乱伦社区 is a place for students to gain resources before going to college and experiencing the joys of adulthood. However, what many don鈥檛 know is that 海角乱伦社区 also nurtures its employees, making the organization invaluable.

Through this experience, I have learned the importance of building bonds and utilizing my creative abilities to help people in small ways. The small projects I get to help with during my internship have not only impacted the way scholars interact with the organization but have also pushed me to continue pursuing my dreams. I will take the lessons of building connections, utilizing my skill set, and more as I carry them into my plans of studying in New York this upcoming spring and getting my master鈥檚 in Marketing once I graduate from undergrad next school year.

Inspired by Aniyah’s story? Head here to learn more about becoming a partner with us! And stay tuned for more blog posts from our Emerge Interns in the weeks to come!

It has been inspiring, gratifying, and motivating to witness the exceptional lives of the program鈥檚 Scholars and to see the alums giving back for a better future for those who follow in their footsteps.”

Why should others get involved with 海角乱伦社区鈥 work?听

“You will get more than you give; the Scholars are inspiring and motivating. There are many ways to get involved 鈥 volunteering, donating, mentoring 鈥 and in doing so, you will play a direct role in changing the lives of not only the Scholars, but their families and communities as well.”

What is something you learned from working with 海角乱伦社区?听

“I have learned that access to education is access to opportunity, and access to opportunity changes lives, families, and communities. 海角乱伦社区 rise, and as they rise, so do others in their spheres of influence.”

鈥淚 had the opportunity to assist many students with their interview lab sessions and essay writing, which was incredibly rewarding. I especially loved being part of the “Onsite College and Leadership Forum,” where over 600 students had the chance to interview with 120 colleges, and many received on-the-spot acceptances. What I enjoy the most are its supportive community, the opportunities it provides for personal and academic growth, as well as its invaluable resources and mentorship for the students”

Vivek said that this award taps into his dedication to mentoring, guiding, and advocating for students, as well as validating his commitment to supporting Scholars’ educational journeys.听

It’s remarkable how 海角乱伦社区 has been assisting thousands of students in navigating the college application process, providing them with firsthand exposure to higher education. The application process can be especially daunting for first-generation college students, making the guidance and support offered by the program invaluable. I am always thankful to 海角乱伦社区 for this wonderful experience in my life.”

JoAnne Dobrick has been a 海角乱伦社区 volunteer since 2018. With her consistent commitment to 海角乱伦社区, she’s been awarded the Longstanding Volunteer Service Award.

For JoAnne, she feels that volunteering with 海角乱伦社区 has made her a more compassionate person. She said she was surprised and honored to receive this award!

鈥淚 love working any event that 海角乱伦社区 has planned. I get great pleasure in meeting the students. Some are so remarkable. I know they will be making a difference in what ever path they choose. Without the training and support they get from 海角乱伦社区, life might be very different.”

“Sometimes we choose a path, sometimes the path chooses us. If we accept our choices we can change our lives, and maybe someone鈥檚 别濒蝉别鈥檚 life as well.

Sujatha Kailas, 海角乱伦社区 mentor since 2020, has been chosen as the Mentor Volunteer of the Year. She’s been a consistent and incredible volunteer and mentor to her Scholars, and has participated in several volunteer opportunities throughout the years.

鈥淥ne of the highlights of being a mentor is always Onsite – It is highly satisfying to see the results of year of long and hard work, and to see the beaming faces of the Scholars makes me feel an incredible amount of gratitude for the work that they and 海角乱伦社区 do. Helping Scholars prepare for their college interviews is also a gratifying experience, as they are each full of charm, determination and enthusiasm

She said that the best part of being a volunteer with 海角乱伦社区, and what keeps her coming back, is hearing from the Scholars themselves.

“The best part is being a part of their life, and to hear them talk about their lives, struggles, and triumphs.”

Through her time as a mentor and volunteer, she’s learned to give young adults the credit they deserve, and that they often just need an open door or helping hand.

“I’ve learned that the younger generation has so much to offer, yet we sometimes mistakenly brush them off. These Scholars are motivated, driven, and care about their community and climate. They all have the ability to contribute positively if they have the right guidance.

July Career Partner Highlight:

Radio Flyer

There’s just over two more weeks until our Emerge Summer Career & Leadership Program closing ceremony – and we’re continuing our series of spotlights on several of our incredible Emerge Career Partners, the companies and organizations that make our Emerge internships possible. For each, we’ll give you a special look at what called them to partner with us, tell stories of their Scholar interns – and maybe inspire you and your company to partner too!

Our July Emerge Career Partner Highlight of the Month is , the company behind the iconic red wagon, which has more recently expanded to so much more. With their headquarters right here on the West Side of Chicago, Radio Flyer has partnered with 海角乱伦社区 to host several Emerge interns over the years, as well as hosting yearly Growth Labs at their Radio Flyer Campus. We talked with Lisa Cockrell, lead of Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging at Radio Flyer, about the company’s commitment to our Scholars.

Firstly, why did you choose to partner with 海角乱伦社区?

Radio Flyer chose to partner with 海角乱伦社区 because of the awesome work and opportunities that they provide to Chicago youth. When we first were introduced to 海角乱伦社区 through a volunteer opportunity at the annual college Onsite event, there was synergy among, parents, students, business partners, colleges/university partners, and the 海角乱伦社区 team that was unparalleled. What 海角乱伦社区 has cultivated for Chicago youth is something great and Radio Flyer wanted to be a part of that work.”听

To continue, why听did you choose to specifically support the Emerge Program as a Career Partner and Growth Lab Host?听

Radio Flyer recognizes that the students of 海角乱伦社区 are some of the best and brightest in the Chicagoland area. As a best places to work company we want to support these students as they matriculate through their college journey.”

What is Radio Flyer looking to accomplish through your internship program?

“Our internship program is a direct pipeline to full-time employment at Radio Flyer. Currently, about 30% of our full-time employees were previous interns.”

What can Emerge Interns plan to experience and learn about at Radio Flyer鈥檚 Growth Lab?听

“Through the Radio Flyer Growth Lab, Emerge Interns will learn professional development skills that will help them become more self-aware, confident and be able to solicit and give feedback. They will tour our Chicago offices and be able to talk with Flyers (employees) in various professional disciplines.”

Finally, what are your hopes for the young adults of Chicago?

Our hope for the young adults of Chicago is that they will have equal access to opportunities for success without systematic barriers. In addition, we hope that young adults find a workplace where they can say, 鈥淚 love my job.鈥

Meet The Emerge Intern – Growth Labs

The 海角乱伦社区 and Invest for Kids Emerge Summer Career and Leadership Program is already almost halfway over! We’re celebrating this year’s class of interns by bringing you a weekly blog post focused on their experience – continuing on this week with a look what projects our interns are working on, and what they’re learning on the job.

This week, we’re featuring a blog post from Henry Lui, whom is interning this summer with , and is a Chicago Scholar from the Class of 2026. He is currently attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Read on for his full post focused on the Growth Labs interns attend each Friday:

As part of the Emerge Program, every Friday, scholars attend professional and leadership
development sessions hosted by a different company each week. In these growth labs, scholars
have the opportunity to learn about the company, network with senior leaders, and engage with
their cohort in the various activities planned for the day.

So far, my cohort has had the chance to visit J.P. Morgan, Equity Group Investment, and Public
Rec. At J.P. Morgan, we learned about the private bank division and had the opportunity to hear
from a group of panelists about their career journey. At Equity Group Investment, we had a Q&A session with the president, Mark Sotir, and an amazing tour of the art pieces around the office. At Public Rec, we heard from the founder, Zach Goldstein, on how he went from working in the finance industry to starting his own clothing company. All of these experiences have been
drastically different, but they all have taught me something new.

While internships provide scholars with the opportunity to get hands-on experience and to
develop professionally, these growth labs provide, other than just opportunities for networking
and learning about a company, a chance to reflect on their personal and professional goals. One
of the main themes that has been present for the past growth labs has been 鈥淲hy?鈥 Hearing
these stories from professionals on how they started in their industry and ended where they are
encourages me to reflect on what I would like to accomplish in my career and most importantly
why I want to do it. This is an especially important aspect to consider when deciding how you
would want to spend the rest of your time in college, and which future internship opportunities
you would want to pursue.

But above all, I would say the most valuable aspect of the growth labs is the time spent with
your cohort and mentor. The people are definitely the ones who make this Emerge experience
memorable. Being surrounded with people with ambition really encourages me to always strive
to be a better person. It motivates me to make the most out of my internship, to get myself out of
my comfort zone, and to work towards my career goals. The coaches also play a huge role in
creating such a wonderful experience. These are people who you can rely on for anything, and
it鈥檚 reassuring to know that you have people that have your back throughout this program.

Meet The Emerge Intern – Work Project Debrief

The 海角乱伦社区 and Invest for Kids Emerge Summer Career and Leadership Program is in full swing! We’re celebrating this year’s class of interns by bringing you a weekly blog post focused on their experience – continuing on this week with a look what projects our interns are working on, and what they’re learning on the job.

This week, we’re featuring a blog post from Dianella Ruiz, whom is interning this summer with , and is a Chicago Scholar from the Class of 2026. She is currently attending Boston University. Read on for her full post:

Interning at Women鈥檚 Business Development Center (WBDC) so far this summer, has been an
enriching experience, particularly due to my involvement in a project centered around the
Berwyn Shops in Illinois. This initiative, supported by county grants, aims to empower small
businesses by providing them with a unique opportunity to test new ideas or products in a retail
environment. Being able to contribute to this project has been both exciting and educational,
offering me insights into the challenges and triumphs of entrepreneurship in a diverse
community.

Growing up in Little Village, Chicago, a predominantly Mexican neighborhood, I have always
been surrounded by the vibrant energy of local businesses. Places like 26th Street have not
only served as economic hubs but also as cultural anchors within the community. Witnessing
their growth and success over the years has given me appreciation for the resilience and
innovation of small business owners.

At WBDC, where I am mainly working with the entrepreneurial services team, I have the
privilege of working closely with the Berwyn Shops project. This initiative stands out because it
not only supports local entrepreneurs but also provides them with essential resources and
mentorship to thrive. WBDC offers services designed to be inclusive and supportive, such as
emphasizing business planning, financial readiness, and market viability. Mandatory workshops
are held for business owners at the Berwyn shops to discuss these topics and more, like
insurance plans, technical support, marketing/accounting services and even basics like support
with building a business plan. Another plus to these workshops is that they come at no cost
which alleviates some of the financial barriers towards expanding a small business. I had the
pleasure of attending one of these workshops, specifically talking about insurance for small
businesses. This comprehensive support system not only equips participants with practical skills
but also builds a network of support among fellow entrepreneurs and mentors. It鈥檚 inspiring to
see how these elements come together to nurture creative ideas and foster sustainable
businesses.

Berwyn, with its significant Latino/Hispanic demographic of 61%, holds a special place in my
heart due to childhood memories and the sense of community I felt there. Being able to engage
directly with business owners at the Berwyn Shops this summer has been a highlight of my
internship. As part of my work, I will be visiting the Berwyn shops to conduct interviews in order to gather success stories and record the economic impact that WBDC has fostered. I am excited
to hear their stories, learn about their journeys, and understand their challenges. These
conversations will reinforce my commitment to supporting local businesses and nurturing
economic growth in communities like Berwyn.

Looking ahead, I am certain my experience at WBDC and with the Berwyn Shops project will
play a crucial role in shaping my career aspirations. My current interest for community-driven
initiatives has only grown. The skills and knowledge gained during this internship will
undoubtedly influence my future endeavors, guiding me towards a career where I can continue
to make a positive impact. I will seek every opportunity to learn and engage with these projects,
taking away invaluable lessons and insights that can shape my perspective and enrich my
experience. As I continue my internship, I hope to not only gain experience, but also create
meaningful connections with those I work with. I look forward to combing my passion for
community development with practical skills in business support, leaving me excited about the
possibilities ahead.

Lastly, I am grateful to 海角乱伦社区 and their Emerge Program for this opportunity in being able to contribute to a meaningful organization and I look forward to continuing learning,
growing and advocating for others in the future.
